Equus plays Playhouse

Peter Shaffer's explosive, award-winning play EQUUS will open at the Cleveland Play House Euclid-77th St. Theatre at 8:30 p.m., on Jan. 19 and will run through Feb. 17.

The winner of the New York Drama Critics, the New York Outer Critics, the Drama Desk and the Tony Awards, EQUUS explores a troubled youth and the tortured soul that causes him to commit a brutal and seemingly senseless act of violence. He is brought to a psychiatrist who, in an effort to understand his motives, causes him to reenact the crime in a startlingly beautiful and moving scene.

Directing EQUUS is Play House Associate Director Larry

California Suite has top comedy

By R. Woodward

For a pleasing example of a popular movie handling gay matters intelligently, go see California

Suite. This film is in

interweaving of sorts of four oneact plays of varying quality by Neil Simon. It is uneven and does not end as well as it starts, but parts of it are as fine as anything you can find in any comedy.

The brightest and most perfect episode, the best written and best acted, is the one starring Maggie Smith and Michael Caine.

She plays an actress noted for her interpretations of roles in plays by various British heavyweights. This actress has been nominated for an Oscar for playing the lead in a banal Hollywood comedy, her worst role in years. Caine plays her long-time husband, a gay ex-actor who is along with her on the trip she's taking to attend the Academy

Awards Ceremony.

Considerate about the men he picks up, as reliable as he can be in dealing with her various needs, he stands with his quipping, ever-mellow manner between her and any self-pity she might be inclined towards.

Caine manages to be amusing while playing his role with a quiet, matter-of-fact manner, and Smith, when called upon to show a jealous tantrum, simply acts jealous with no inordinate fuss being made about the husband's happening to be gay. Perhaps seeing this episode will enlighten a lot of edgy heathens who might have been scared away by hearing all about it ahead of time.
